Powers And Abilities
Strengths:
- Mysterious: No one has ever been able to pinpoint what it is about Mysterious Jack, but all have been in agreement that he lives up to his name. There's just something....off about him, like he isn't really there at all, or as if he could walk around a corner and vanish. He just emits an aura of strangeness that practically begs you to keep a close watch on him, lest he do something mischevious.
- Supernatural Luck: Perhaps part of the reason people find him so strange, Mysterious Jack just has....impossible luck. Such as being in just the right spot to not get clobbered by debris in the event of an explosion, or managing to fall down a set of stairs in just the way so as to not only not break anything, but come out completely unharmed, or even managing to somehow live after taking a several mile fall, and many other extraordinary feats which can only be chalked up to honest-to-goodness luck.
- Laws of Eccentricity: Mysterious Jack has, in his own words, "cast off those silly little laws and such which keep you restricted to that wonderful little plane you call three dimensional." This is the true reason for his strangeness, as it gives him the capability to do things which literally shouldn't be possible, such as walking up a wall, or simply walking around one corner, and then reappearing from around another, or something as outright fanciful as walking behind a streetlamp and disappearing, only to reapper from around a corner or something to that effect.
- Chronolock: To put it simply, Mysterious Jack exists outside the normal boundaries of space and time. He is therefore uneffected by the passage of time and will not age a day no matter how much time passes, and he literally has his own personal timestream and plane of space, rendering him uneffected by any outside changes in time or space in the "normal" world around him. As well, he is able to literally see beyond the veil of time and perceive anything happening at any time. As an interesting note, Mysterious Jack no longer has any need to eat, drink or breathe, though he is, of course, wholly capable of doing so.
- Quick and Flexible: True to his thin, lithe frame, Mysterious Jack is extremely quick, nimble, and flexible, almost to the point of being inhuman.
- Skilled Swordsman: While he's far from an expert, Mysterious Jack is a competent swordsman, able to hold his own against many a foe in single combat.
- Crack Shot: While, again, far from an expert, Mysterious Jack is quite a skilled marksman, and definitely a better shot than he is swordsman.
- Master Magician: Something Mysterious Jack has an odd, natural talent for. Stage magic! Anything you can think of that might be pulled off on stage through clever sleight-of-hand, illusions or trickery, Mysterious Jack can do it genuinely. And not only that, he can pull much more than a rabbit out of his hat. Where do you think he keeps his sword and revolvers?
Weaknesses:
- Still Mostly Human: Despite his impressive, mysterious nature and powers, Mysterious Jack is still as human as anyone else. If you punch him it'll hurt, if you cut him he'll bleed, he still needs to breathe, etcetera. While he may be immune to time's flow, he's not immune to being killed by other people
- Rather Frail: While Mysterious Jack is quick and nimble, he's also wiry and frail. A single good hit will likely leave him seriously injured and it wouldn't take more than a few good hits to bring him down for the count.
- Coward: When it comes down to it, Mysterious Jack is a bit of a coward, with more than a handful of things that openly terrify him. When faced with these things, he's liable to outright shut down or directly flee.
- Self-Sacrificing: As an obvious, direct contradiction to his cowardice, Mysterious Jack is the first one to step in to defend those who he has befriended, and put himself directly in harm's way to ensure theri safety, thinking nothing of throwing away his own life if necessary.
Weapons And Equipment:
[/size]
- Cane: Yes, you heard right, his cane. No, it isn't made of some rare, indestructible metal which makes it a powerful weapon. It does, however, have a handy feature of lighting up with enough electrical voltage to paralyze a normal man for a good few seconds with just the tap of a button on one end.
- Rapier: A simple rapier. Not elegant or particularly fancy, but well-made and quite servicable for the job it's used for. The only remarkable fact about it is that it seems to be nigh-unbreakable.
- Twin Revolvers: A twin pair of .44 caliber revolvers. Nothing really spectacular about them.
- Concealed Blades: Concealed on the upper side of either wrist, and in the toe of each shoe there are six inch long concealed steel blades. All it takes is a tap of a button for the wrist blades, or tapping a concealed button in the heel of his shoes, and the blades spring to life!
- Neural Shock Gloves: Contained in both gloves, Mysterious Jack has an interesting gadget. If he can get his fingertips on someone's head, he can deliver a neural shock that will temporarily overload their entire nervous system, rendering them completely immobile and effectively paralyzed for one post. Each glove contains one "charge", rendering the neural shock usable only twice per thread.
- Pocketwatch: What appears to be a simple silver pocketwatch which he always seems to be checking. Properly employed, it allows him to alter his perception of time, emulating the effects of Haste upon his allies or Slow upon his enemies, each effect lasting for two posts and needing a four-post cooldown after the effect has worn off before it is usable again.
Personal Information
Personality:
Mysterious Jack is....something of an enigma. He almost seems to exist in his own little world, and is rarely, if ever, bothered by anything that happens around him. He can wave off anything with a grin and a laugh, and nothing ever seems to get to him. He delights in both asking questions and simply making others question things they normally wouldn't. In fact, he's something of a helpful troublemaker. He delights in mischief of all shapes and sizes, and is quick to cause it, but rarely does any actual harm, and is quick to offer a helping hand to pull someone out of any trouble he's caused.
He is either irritatingly evasive with his statements, or painfully direct and blunt, as the situation may warrant, though it is often difficult to tell when he is making idle, playful threats, or giving a genuine warning, such is his easy, impassive demeanor. He also has a penchant for letting on that he knows something, without giving any hint as to what exactly it is he might know, deriving great amusement as most are driven batty trying to figure out what it is he knows.
History:
Mysterious Jack's early life and origins, right down to the date he was born, are all a complete and utter mystery. Many suspect he took the liberty of....removing such records himself at a later time. The only one who knows anything about such facts is Jack himself, and he doesn't bother to recall such triviality most of the time. At any rate, however, he was born like any other person would be, though his name was not then Mysterious Jack, or even Jack. What was it? Oh.....what does it matter? He makes up names every times someone asks him, so even he probably doesn't remember.
His early life was largely unworthy of note. He attended school as any other child, and did well -- outstanding, some might say. He was eccentric and certainly strange, and it's said all of his teachers and even classmates remembered him for the rest of their lives. He graduated at the top of his class, but didn't bother going to college -- much to the chagrin of his parents. Instead, he went into a form of what some might call private study, working on this and that, various inventions and devices he had thought up over his life.
It was during one such experiment, involving time and an attempt to alter its flow, that tragedy struck -- if it could be called tragedy. The details of that day have always been sketchy in Jack's mind, and he has had no desire to recall them, as he easily could. What he can remember, is the sound of a great explosion, a blinding light, and the sound of many clocks ticking at abnormal speed and suddenly.....stopping. Then nothing.
He was said to have lapsed into a coma for many years after that event, and many left him for as good as dead. His awakening caught all by surprise, though not so much as another odd fact; he had not aged at all since the incident. He seemed not even a moment older than he had then, although it had been at least a decade since. And indeed, he found himself just as spry and physically able now as then, despite being confined to a bed for so many years.
It confused and perplexed him greatly, and it also aroused a strong curiosity within him. After his so-called brush with death, many warned him against returning to his strange "experiments", and for a time, he heeded their warnings, and even took the time to re-acquaint with his former friends and family. But after a handful of years, when he again noticed that for whatever reason he simply refused to age, he felt his strange experiments calling to him again.
Without warning or trace, he simply disappeared one night, flitting away to work on a project that had literally come to him in a dream. The result of this project was his trademark pocketwatch he carries with him at all times now. With this device in hand, he set off to discover just....why he had stopped aging. His research yielded no answer for many years, and by the time he was ready to give it up, he stumbled upon a discovery completely by accident.
The items he had been working on during the experience that had left him with this strange gift were as pristine as they had been on that day, despite the many years that had passed. This sparked an all new branch of thought in his mind, which he immediately returned to work on. The results this time, after another handful of years of work, were vastly different. In the notes he left behind that were found many years after he disappears for good, he had written many things that seemed little more than nonsense; words and terms he had made up himself to describe his studies.
The one thing that made sense made reference to the sound of ticking clocks and a sense of stillness and peace, and there was a vague idea that he had brushed the very phenomenon which had caused his strange "condition" to begin with. This time he had been able to interact with that phenomenon without being overwhelmed by it as he had previously, and wound up swept up along the timestream.
Though it was impossible to measure how long he spent flitting about time, Mysterious Jack spent easily several thousand years, as measured by his pocketwatch, exploring as he would, learning a great many things as he went, and discovering just how deep the "powers" that he had truly went.
When the time came that he finally grew bored of his self-given role as a traveller and an observer, he slipped back out of the timestream, into "solid time", as he called it. Spending a few dozen years to get re-acquainted with just how normal things worked, he simply did what he could to make his way.

"And here we are.....right on time, as scheduled." Casting a glance from his pocketwatch to the structure before him, Mysterious Jack smirked in a way that could only be described as mischevious, stowing the pocketwatch away. Tossing his cane up, he caught it in one hand, pulling his hat down against a sudden breeze with the other, and set off at a brisk walk, tucking his cane under one arm. "I believe I may actually be early." He tilted his head back to look at the sky. "It hasn't started to rain quite yet."
Fishing around in a pocket with his free hand, he produced a small, black leather-bound book. Flipping through it momentarily, he smiled as he came to what he was looking for. "Ah yes, how silly of me......I seem to have gotten the entirely wrong day." He slapped the book against his face, shaking it in a somber way, though he had a broad smirk playing on his features.
"Well. Now that I have a bit of time to myself until tomorrow...." He snapped the small book closed and slid it back in his pocket, tossing his cane up again, and catching it as it came down, planting it on the ground with a resounding clack. "I believe I shall take a nice stroll." And off he went, humming merrily to himself.
