Powers And Abilities
Strengths:
Phazon Entity: Very strong, lithe and graceful, Dark Samus has shown herself to easily be Samus's equal in terms of physical ability, performing cartwheels, backflips and other acrobatics with apparent ease during combat. In addition to her considerable movement abilities, Dark Samus has shown herself to be highly resistant to most forms of attack. In the event of close quarters confrontation, Dark Samus has one other nasty secret - she is toxic and radioactive in a literal sense. While she is capable of controlling how much radiation she leaks to the point of being able to nearly erase the exposure to any nearby victims, touching her is the same as touching a white hot radioactive substance, and just as deadly. As it is a result of her Phazon based body, the radiation will penetrate almost all known substances, making most forms of protection useless against direct contact.
Metroid: While highly mutated and virtually unrecognizable from her original form, the core of Dark Samus's being is still that of a Metroid. As a result she has access to many of the same abilities of her unmutated brethren, granting her the power of unassisted flight, energy absorbtion and the rather nasty ability of being able to spawn more Metroids from her body in the presence of beta radiation.
Extremely Durable Life Form: Over the course of her life Dark Samus has been utterly destroyed a number of times - first as Metroid Prime on Tallon IV, thrice more on Aether and once again on Phaaze, surviving even the complete collapse of a dimension. Each and every time she has been reborn stronger, smarter and more vengeful than before, further evolving with each resurrection. In the unlikely event that she would be destroyed again, her body would simply disintegrate into countless motes of Phazon energy which would just as quickly dissapate to reform elsewhere, and should said energy be absorbed, she would likely use her possession abilities to take control of the new body or simply absorb its abilities before destroying it from within and reforming with the rest of her "body". Stronger, faster and in general more powerful than her namesake, corrosive, poisonous or overall hazardous environments seem to have no effect on her, and she is highly resistant to most hazardous substances. In addition, Dark Samus has shown herself to be perfectly capable of surviving in vacuum environments unaided.
Evolutionary Leaps and Bounds: Like the original Hunter, the doppleganger has an astounding proficiency for absorbing new abilities and weapons - as Metroid Prime it assimilated an incredible number of offensive weaponry, energy shielding systems and armor into its body within mere minutes, and it would later absorb Samus's own Phazon Suit and genetic code to reform itself into Dark Samus rather than perishing. With each subsequent "death" it gained new abilities, eventually reaching the point of being able to absorb powers and weapons from defeated, killed or corrupted life forms much as the original Samus could.
Dark Echoes: One of her latest abilities, this allows Dark Samus to create two autonomous copies of herself to attack, distract or defend against a foe. In a pinch Dark Samus can absorb them back into herself, healing wounds and restoring energy in the process.
Corrupted Being: By far one of her most useful and insidious abilities, this allows Dark Samus to infect and corrupt nearly anything, alive or not, physical or not (as even the native substance was able to corrupt ghosts, machines and plants), with Phazon Seeds. While these may seem to actually be beneficial to the target at first, granting them increased durability, more powerful attacks and increased resistance or immunity to what are normally highly toxic sources of Phazon in addition to allowing their own bodies to produce Phazon themselves, it all works to Dark Samus's benefit. Over time the Phazon Seed will slowly grow, slowly supplanting the host's original abilities with Phazon based versions and increasing Dark Samus's hold over them. Eventually the being or object will become much like what Dark Samus herself is, a corrupted echo of their original selves that is under Dark Samus's complete control. What happens from this point on is a matter decided by the Worm herself - she can either kill them and absorb their abilities, or use them as pawns for whatever other purpose she sees fit. Finally, Dark Samus has shown herself to be capable of actually fusing with corrupted beings and using their bodies as her own at a whim.
Dimension Hopper: It has been very heavily implied that Dark Samus possesses the ability to "hop" between other dimensions that lie parallel to one another if she is sufficiently strong enough at the time, especially given the ease with which she simply traveled between the dimensions of Light and Dark Aether unaided.
Phazon Shield: A highly unstable but useful ability, the shield comes in two flavors. The first and most common is a simple column shaped shield of nearly transparent, harmful Phazon energy that only lasts for a few moments, although it will deflect any and every attack during that time in addition to repelling anything near Dark Samus with a stinging rebuttal. This version, while useful, does not last long and requires Dark Samus to land and stop moving while in use. The second version is far more powerful, and much more rarely seen - encapsulating Dark Samus in a cocoon of nearly opaque Phazon energy, this ability renders her immune to any and all forms of conventional attack, allowing energy and matter out but not in. As a result Dark Samus is able to still attack while using it.
Screw Attack: A corrupted version of the original, this ability enshrouds Dark Samus is a cocoon of highly destructive Phazon energy, acting as both a shield and weapon as she rushes the foe from midair. Extremely fast when in use and difficult to dodge, the modified Screw Attack usually destroys most target upon direct contact save for hardened ones - as a result it is able to plow through most forms of light to medium cover without slowing down, but larger objects can stop or slow it down. Dark Samus cannot be harmed while using the attack.
Arm Cannon: Yet another ability stolen from Samus Aran in addition to her new body, Dark Samus's Arm Cannon, while far more limited in terms of weaponry, is much more powerful, firing a beam weapon Samus herself has only used on a handful of occasions but to devestating effect - the Phazon Beam. Capable of destroying most targets on contact, the beam can be fired in several different modes - single shots reminiscent of Samus's original Power Beam, a laser thin line of pure Phazon energy capable of actually slicing through several inches of armor plate with ease, a wave of countless shots of Phazon "shrapnel", and a large, broad version of the second mode of fire, usually reserved for the most powerful of foes. The final and most dangerous mode of fire is her Charge shot, which is capable of corrupting targets with Phazon Seeds. In addition to the Phazon Beam, Dark Samus is completely capable of firing the same missiles as Samus, as well as the powerful Super Missile and a Phazon based variety of the Ice Spreader.
Morph Ball: The Phazon Suit, genetic code and Arm Cannon were not the only things stolen from Dark Samus's namesake - in addition to those already powerful abilities she had also acquired a version of Samus's Morph Ball. Capable of laying both the standard small energy explosives known as Morph Ball Bombs as well as the exceedingly destructive Power Bombs, it is not a threat that should be underestimated.
Boost Ball: An ability showcased on Aether, the Boost Ball is exactly what it sounds like - it grants a simple, quick burst of movement speed to the Morph Ball, or at least that was what it had originally did. Dark Samus took it a step further - as she is able to build up startling amounts of kinetic energy in a fraction of the usual time, the monster has turned what was normally an ability of minimal threat into a very dangerous weapon, ramming enemies with incredible amounts of force and making her that much more difficult to hit than before.
Stealth Generator: An ability gained on Aether, likely from killed Pirate Commandos, this ability renders Dark Samus completely invisible to the naked eye at a moment's notice.
Wavequake: One of her oldest abilities from back during her life as Metroid Prime, lost and regained, the Wavequake allows Dark Samus to launch a shockwave of highly destructive energy that radiates outward from her along the ground. Very powerful, the attack would destroy most military targets in one or two hits.
Grapple Beam: Yet another ability regained from her days as Metroid Prime. Unlike Samus's version, Dark Samus's Grapple Beam can latch onto any target she wishes.
Weaknesses:
Next Time......: Above all, Dark Samus is vengeful and vindictive - if someone causes her undue headaches and trouble at some point, later down the road she will take the first chance she gets to pay them back for it. People who are aware of this will be able to use it to their advantage should they wish to bait traps, but what they want to do afterward will likely be easier said than done.
Phazon Addiction: While it's unclear as to whether or not this is purely a mental shortcoming or whether or not she actually needs it to survive, the fact that her own body can produce Phazon points to the idea of this being the former. While she has enough sanity to know that absorbing most of the few remaining sources of Phazon will likely result in the complete eradication of the substance, that does not make it any easier for her. Indeed, as time wears on this fact will probably begin to take a toll on her mind, meaning that if she cannot find or create new sources of Phazon she will likely slip back down the slippery slope of insanity.
She's still more or less..... whateverthehellsheis?: For all of her seemingly overpowering abilities and the fact that she is likely to be unable to truly die, her physical body can still be destroyed..... assuming you have enough firepower. While you will likely need to pay dearly for it in terms of ammunition and personell, she can be beaten if you pump enough hurt into her before she can do the same to you.
Unstable Body: Like her mind, Dark Samus's body has several hints of instability to it - like the material it's made of, it is not sound. As a result of supercharging her body with an unimaginable amount of Phazon, Dark Samus has become very vulnerable to weapons and abilities fueled or charged by the very substance she seeks to absorb. While she won't drop from a single hit from such an attack, it will take far, far fewer of these such hits to "destroy" her, and most beings possessing such attacks will be very serious threats to her. It has also been mentioned that while she is nearly impossible to kill, the complete atomic disruption of her body would theoretically be capable of killing her permanently - what exactly is meant by this is unclear, though, as she was on Dark Aether when the reality itself collapsed, something that should have completely destroyed any matter within it. It should be noted that after this event, however, Dark Samus was unable to reform into a physical body, and remained as raw Phazon energy until exposed to more of the substance which was then absorbed and used to create her current form.
Phazon Shield: While the second version is undoubtedly more powerful, it does have several flaws that make it cumbersome to use. First and foremost is that she is completely immobile while using it, and that her aim is severely compromised while inside of it - she can see you only as well as you see her. Thirdly, it is extremely tiring for her to use - while it lasts much longer than the first version of her shield, she will exhaust herself trying to maintain it for more than a few minutes at a time. Finally, it, like her very body, is highly vulnerable to Phazon based/augmented attacks - they will penetrate the second version of the shield like it doesn't even exist.
Screw Attack: Above all, it is slow. While Dark Samus moves incredibly fast after launching it, it is extremely easy to tell when she is about to use the attack in that it must be charged, and while she cannot be harmed while doing so, it does make predicting her moves very easy. Dodging the attack once launched, while difficult in the extreme, is not impossible - beings with precognitive abilities will be able to dodge with relative ease, and everyone else can still move out of the way if they are smart and lucky as the attack moves in a straight line once launched. There are a number of substances capable of withstanding the attack, but they are few and far between, and only workable when layered several feet thick. Dark Samus herself is briefly vulnerable to attack upon completion of the technique - she will be momentarily covered by Phazon and immune to harm, but as the Phazon begind to recede she will be stationary and relatively unprotected for a few precious seconds before recovering.
Boost Ball: Like the Screw Attack, charging for the Boost Ball is relatively slow in that it needs a few second of doing so before it can be used, although Dark Samus is covered in Phazon and immune to harm while charging and using it. The attack is not aimed, however, and is completely random - in short, easily dodgable by those with pregonitive abilities as well as fast moving or flying targets, and it will not cause much harm, if any, to very large, armored targets.
Phazon Beam: The single shot and "shrapnel beams", while fast and difficult to dodge, are relatively weak in comparision - while you don't want to get hit by either, anything above the average human footsoldier is unlikely to die with a single shot or being hit with less than half of a "shrapnel beam" wave. The other attacks, however, do not share this lack of power - single shots from either would destroy tanks in the merest fraction of a second. What they gain in power, though, they lose in speed - the "laser" version of the attack has a very defined area of damage limited to the beam itself, and while quick and capable of being swept across an area once fired requires roughly a full second to charge, and Dark Samus becomes immobile while firing it. The most powerful version, however, has relatively few weaknesses - as a result of having to charge her entire body with Phazon energy to use it, Dark Samus cannot be harmed despite being immobile, but the beam itself if highly visible and slow to move to follow moving targets despite its width and punch.
Stealth Generator: While it renders Dark Samus invisible, she can still be detected through other physical means as it merely erases her from sight. Sound, thermal and other methods of tracking her will still work (for the most part).
Wavequake: Slow, predictable and cannot hit flying targets. It has a defined range of roughly 45 meters before beginning to weaken, disappearing completely at 60 meters. It can be cleared by targets on the ground, but they must jump to or otherwise reach an altitude of roughly 6 to 8 meters above the shockwave to avoid being hit.
Grapple Beam: It cannot latch onto targets more than 25 meters away, and can be broken free of by a sufficiently strong individual with enough leverage.
Dark Echoes: While they look identical to Dark Samus and possess the same basic physical abilities as well as flight, they are limited to the use of only their Arm Cannons' basic Phazon Beam and can be destroyed rather easily (one or two strong hits or mulitple weaker hits).
Corruption/Possession: As powerful an ability as it is, it is also a double edged sword - beings corrupted and fueled by Phazon are also among the only things Dark Samus truly has to fear due to her vulnerability to Phazon based attacks. In the event that such a creation managed to stave off their complete corruption long enough to find and engage Dark Samus in combat they would be her biggest threat. Once defeated, though, all of the Phazon Seeds planted during that "life" would consume themselves, freeing any of her surviving pawns from her hold and cleansing them of their corruption, Phazon based abilities and enhanced physiology. Once a target is terminally corrupted and more or less becomes what Dark Samus herself is, however, her hold on the corrupted becomes more simple suggestion than actual possession and can be ignored - the target, however, is not connected to Dark Samus in any meaningful way and can't be possessed. Once Dark Samus is "destroyed", however, these will remain corrupted.
Dimension Hopper: While a very powerful ability in it's own right, Dark Samus is limited in that she cannot transcend to higher or lower planes of existance simply at will - that is to say she is firmly rooted in the fourth and fifth dimensions, incapable of time travel or visiting completely different universes. If she jumps to a different dimension, she more or less remains stationary - if she's on Earth, using this ability won't transport her to a different planet. Apart from that, the area of space she is attempting to use the ability in must be weakened, damaged or an already thin barrier between one reality and the next.
Other Flaws:
As difficult to defeat as she is and despite the fact that she likely cannot be truly killed, she can be put out of the game for a long time. The amount of time that her body seems to need to reform following each defeat seems to vary, but with each loss seems to be growing longer as well - she reformed immediately following her defeat as Metroid Prime, took roughly a day or so to reform following her second defeat, yet another few days following that one, and after that roughly a week based on the series of events that transpired afterwards.
Weapons And Equipment:
All listed above - they're very likely part of her actual body.
Personal Information
Personality:
Above all, Dark Samus is driven by two things, and two things alone - to absorb ever increasing amounts of Phazon and other forms of raw energy, likely to increase the stability of her physical form and maintain the sanity that she has gained since her stay on Aether, and to spread Phazon to other worlds in the hopes of transforming them into copies of the sentient planet Phaaze, which has since been destroyed. She is well equipped to this task, especially in terms of mental ability - while still mentally unstable, Dark Samus is quick, intelligent and completely ruthless. During the attack on Norion she demonstrated considerable strategic and tactical savvy, very nearly corrupting the world and failing only by a chance fluke which also lost her the three other worlds currently under the terraforming process and Phaaze itself. Extremely vengeful and vindictive to a fault, Dark Samus has been shown to anger quickly when things do not go according to plan.
Apart from that it has also been noted that she demonstrates considerable charisma, although whether or not this was the result of the Leviathan slowly corrupting her followers and bending them even further to her will remains to be seen.
History:
When a Leviathan first impacted Tallon IV, it began to spread Phazon across the planet. For protection, it found a Metroid from an unknown source. Somehow, this Metroid absorbed the core and became it. This creature was prophesied by the Chozo as a Worm, that will destroy the planet. The Artifact Temple was built around the Impact Crater to imprison the Metroid Prime, but they knew the prison would not hold it forever. Eventually the creature broke free of its prison, burrowing through the depths of the impact crater and absorbing Phazon until it encountered the Space Pirates - having discovered Tallon IV and determined Phazon to be a valuable energy source, they began mining operations to obtain it. While Matroid Prime was able to kill all of the miners and most of the security team sent after it, Prime was eventually subdued and captured.
Seeing Prime as a possible new standard for the weaponization of Metroids, the Pirates began to stdy it in earnest until it broke loose - sensing a large tank of Phazon outside of its new prison, the creature broke free and absorbed it all, killing several Pirates in the process and absorbing their weapons, armor and shielding which it then integrated into its own body. The Pirates, unable to seperate the componants from its body, set it loose where they had found it rather than risking another "prison break". From that point on it would fester, grow and feed until Samus Aran made planetfall, dismantling the Pirate operation, hunting Prime down and defeating it. It's body, highly unstable to begin with, began to collapse, along with the entire impact crater as a result of absorbing the Leviathan Core - in a final, desperate effort it lashed out, attempting to absorb Samus to stabilize itself but only managing to take her Phazon Suit and some of her DNA in the process. Samus, fleeing the crater to avoid being trapped inside of it when it collapsed, assumed Prime to be dead - as she left the recovering world, however, Dark Samus was born, emerging from the pool of Phazon that was once Metroid Prime's original body. As the Pirates licked their wound and retreated it is likely that Dark Samus stowed away aboard one of their ships bound for their bases and secondary mining operations on Aether.
Dark Samus landed on Aether an unknown amount of time before Samus arrived in search of lost Federation soldiers. The Space Pirates mistook Dark Samus for Samus Aran but were confounded by her aberrant behavior; instead of destroying the Pirates, she consumed their Phazon, only killing those that attempted to stop her from doing so. Her irrepressible infiltration and repeated raids cost the Pirates much in the way of Phazon, and she even crippled their stealth field generator on at least one occasion, leaving them especially vulnerable to Federation attack. It was only after Samus Aran made planetfall on Aether that the Pirates realized they were dealing with a second Hunter, and considered trying to forge an alliance with Dark Samus in an effort to repel Samus's assaults.
Samus first encounters Dark Samus inside an abandoned Galactic Federation base set up by the GFMC Task Force Herakles on Aether. Samus follows Dark Samus through a Dark Portal leading to Dark Aether and finds her absorbing Phazon on the other side of the portal. Dark Samus destroys a Light Crystal that Samus is near to, allowing a group of Warrior Ing to swarm in and steal most of Samus's equipment. Samus narrowly manages to escape from the Ing before Dark Aether's atmosphere causes any severe damage to her.
Later, Samus briefly encounters Dark Samus in a Space Pirate facility in the Agon Wastes. Dark Samus shuts off the most direct route through the facility, forcing Samus to take a different route. Shortly thereafter, Samus finds Dark Samus in the Phazon Processing, absorbing more Phazon once again, and engages her in battle. Dark Samus uses many variations of Samus's weaponry, but Samus defeats her counterpart. However, contrary to appearances, Dark Samus was not destroyed entirely.
Samus comes across Dark Samus again in the Training Chamber of Torvus Bog. Dark Samus reforms, laughs, and then dissipates without attempting to intimidate or attack Samus. Her intentions during this encounter were unclear, and Dark Samus does not show herself to Samus again until she travels to Sanctuary Fortress.
When Samus arrives at the Sanctuary Entrance on her way out, Dark Samus again confronts Samus. Dark Samus destroys the bridge structure here in an attempt to prevent Samus from using it to access the elevator leading from Sanctuary to the Temple Grounds. Despite the bridge being destroyed, Samus is able to use her recently recovered Spider Ball to cross the newly-formed gap. They encounter one another again in the Sanctuary; on this occasion, Samus finds Dark Samus obliterating three Dark Pirate Troopers attempting to force her to take a detour to access the Phazon. Samus follows after Dark Samus. They engage in combat again in the nearby Aerie Access elevator, which Dark Samus activates, and the battle continues into the Aerie Transport Station chamber. Though Dark Samus demonstrates several new techniques, including a powerful variant of the Charge Beam, an augmented Boost system, and the ability to render herself invisible to the normal light spectrum, Samus is able to defeat her again. Dark Samus then staggers and falls off of the edge of the fortress, though data indicates that she will be able to reform herself after sustaining any damage short of total atomic disruption.
Not long after Samus eliminates the Emperor Ing and acquires the Light of Aether from Dark Aether's final Energy Controller, the planet becomes unstable. While Samus attempts to escape Dark Aether, Dark Samus blocks her path with a wall of Phazon in an attempt to impede Samus's escape. By this time, Dark Samus has absorbed excessive amounts of Phazon into her system rendering her unstable without venting excess Phazon energy. After Samus deals adequate damage to her, Dark Samus temporarily becomes a being of pure Phazon energy and creates a shield impervious to all weaponry, save for blasts of Phazon. By using her Charge Beam, Samus draws in expelled Phazon then fires it back at Dark Samus. After several blasts, Dark Samus disintegrates.
After Samus successfully completes her mission on Aether and departs, a cloud of Phazon in space above the planet coalesces and forms a new body for Dark Samus. It seems that she was unable to maintain this form, as she is later collected by Space Pirates in the form of raw Phazon.
After her defeat on Aether, Dark Samus's remains are picked up by the Space Pirate battleship Colossus, which had been retrieving the remainder of the Phazon on the planet Aether. Dark Samus was able to regain her form using energy from Phazon stored on board. Once she regained her form, she proceeded to kill a third of the Space Pirates on the ship. Dark Samus then brainwashes the remainder of the Pirates into following her.
After subduing the Space Pirates, Dark Samus leaves them adrift and ventures off alone to the planet Phaaze, the source of all Phazon. She returns to her followers atop a Leviathan, a destructive seed of Phaaze; she orders the Space Pirates to follow her back through a wormhole to her homeworld, and those who refused were slaughtered. With the aid of her corrupted disciples, Dark Samus invades the G.F.S. Valhalla to acquire an Aurora Unit with which she might better control her living planet. Outmatched by their Phazon-powered weapons, the Valhalla was rendered helpless, the Aurora Unit 313 taken, and the crew jettisoned into space. Dark Samus takes the Aurora Unit to Phaaze, implants it there, and takes command of the entire planet. From there, she sends a Leviathan to the Pirate Homeworld, using it to corrupt all the Space Pirates living there and gradually turning the Pirate Homeworld into a living planet of Phazon like Phaaze.
Dark Samus launches three additional Leviathans, destined for Bryyo, Elysia, and Norion. Dark Samus goes to Norion herself to ensure the Leviathan's impact, since it is heavily guarded by the Galactic Federation. The Leviathans bound for Bryyo and Elysia strike successfully, but the one headed for Norion fails. Samus Aran, Rundas, Ghor, and Gandrayda manage to repulse the Norion attack, but Dark Samus infects the four hunters with Phazon. Samus was able to resist Phazon's corrupting influence, but the three other bounty hunters eventually succumbed and became the servants of Dark Samus.
Samus heads to the location of each impacted Leviathan, defeating a corrupted Hunter and a mammoth Leviathan Guardian at each planet. She then uses the Leviathan that Dark Samus used to take the Space Pirates to Phaaze to warp to Phaaze.
The only direct battle between Samus and Dark Samus happens on Phaaze. After her defeat, Dark Samus merges with Aurora Unit 313. Samus destroys the Aurora Unit, which purges the Phazon from her, and Dark Samus is supposedly exterminated with no signs of survival, the planet itself detonating shortly afterwards. Dark Samus, however, proved to be just as resiliant as she had been during the destruction of Dark Aether - while Phaaze itself had been destroyed the planet had left something akin to a small nebula of expanding Phazon in its wake, providing more than enough material for Dark Samus to rebuild her form once more, and plenty of "food" to sustain and strengthen herself in the years following her rebirth.
Sample Post
Darkness - that was all she had ever really known, and all she ever really would know. Even during her ealiest moments, the earliest memories that she could recall of the light, something had always seemed off, wrong, out of place, and those memories seemed like they had been from a lifetime ago, from a different individual with a different life, and it had been there that the darkness had found her. What few moments of the light flickering during those moments had been drowned out by black, but it was not something that she had feared - she knew that the being should have been afraid, at least on some instinctual level even if it had been incapable of complex thought, but it had been too consumed by a hunger so basic that it permeated even those memories, a tangible feeling even now. Rather than fleeing it had embraced the black nothingness, consuming it all even as it grew both around and inside of her, the creature herself growing along with it. For the longest time it had been a simple monotony of memories and events, so monotonous that they all seemed to blend together into a mere few minutes.
And then there had been pain. Pain so blinding and a rage so powerful that even now it consumed her very being, and it had been there that she had become self aware, been born into the world, had finally been able to recall memories and thoughts her own rather than that of some other thing that had come before her. Even despite not thinking of those memories as her own, though, they still controlled her - they were an inseperable part of her very being, just as the very substance she sought to consume was. A paradox, really, and one that she didn't quite understand herself, but she didn't need to - she knew full well what would happen if she was deprived of the toxic substance her very being was made of, and she had no desire to travel down that path again, especially with the loss of Phaaze.
The very thought of the loss, though already several years old, filled Dark Samus with yet another wave of mixed pain and rage, both at herself for failing to protect what had been rightfully hers and at the being that had been responsible for it all, the gold clad doppleganger that had been present in all of her memories since birth - the being who had undone her on several occasions, each time more painful than the last. If nothing else, though Dark Samus was strong, and she knew it - she had returned from each encounter more powerful than before, but that wouldn't continue to happen if she kept exepriencing that undying death without more Phazon to replenish her body with after each time. It had been that purpose, that sole objective that had been her sole reason for existance for the past four years - the most basic of instincts, that of self preservation, something that all living things, regardless of how they were born possessed.
